You can easily purchase silver cleaning solutions. However, there’s another way of cleaning your silver items. Line the inside of a small bowl with aluminum foil. Place your jewelry in it, and put baking soda until the item is covered with it. Afterwards, pour hot water in the small bowl. Bubbles will form. Simply wait for it to stop, remove the silver item, dry and polish with a soft cloth. The procedure should be repeated a few times if the item is heavily tarnished.

Gold pieces can be cleaned by adding detergent in warm water. Let your jewelry soak in the mixture for a few minutes. Take it out and remove dirt and grime by scrubbing it with a soft toothbrush. Use warm water for rinsing excess detergent. Use a jewelry cloth to dry it, making sure no moisture remains that can make the metal look dull.

Both women and men wedding bands look stunning with diamonds in them. However, diamonds can look a bit cloudy after some time, and they lose their attractiveness. Ammonia can work great on restoring their luster, but it may ruin the metals they’re set in. Instead, use a mixture of detergent and warm water. Avoid any form of abrasion when cleaning pearls, as they can get scratched easily. To remove dirt on them, soak them in a soapy water solution. Use baby soap instead, as it’s milder than most other soaps available. Allow the pearls to soak in the solution for a few minutes. Follow it with a drying of a jewelry cloth.

Gemstones should be treated the way you treat pearls when cleaning. But hard variants may be scrubbed with the help of a soft toothbrush. Porous variants should not be soaked in cleaning solutions. They should be cleaned with a simple wiping of a soft, damp cloth. Ultrasonic method of cleaning works on hard gemstones. But using such method on soft ones may only cause them to crack or break.

There are times that a professional cleaning is your only resort. For instance, silver mens wedding bands may tarnish easily because of men’s active lifestyle. However, after some time, silver may darken in color naturally. So no amount of cleaning at home can remove such. Likewise, antique or any other delicate jewelry are best left in the hands of a professional jeweler for cleaning.
